Winter Running: Part II – Jackets!
Winter is here! Previously, I advised you on your base layer (synthetics and merino wool for wicking action and moisture management), extolled the usefulness of a quarter zip for layering, and discussed the benefits of running tights versus running pants (short version: they both have virtues – choose what works for you). Let’s now turn to the winter running essential: the running jacket. There is a running jacket for just about any weather condition but most people don’t have the luxury of accumulating dozens of “just right” jackets and will have to choose one or two that will meet their...
Winter Running: Part I
Well, that escalated quickly! Just last weekend, as we ran to build running community and raise money for the Regional Food Bank during Fleet Feet Albany’s Fourth Annual 24 Hour Fight Against Hunger, we were comfortable wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts. Now, cooler temperatures have appeared and sleet and snow will be our companions for the next few months. There is, however, no need to despair. With a few adjustments, you can run through the winter and be in great shape come springtime. Man, not this again… Successful winter running boils down to two ideas: have the right gear for...
Some Thoughts on Why We Run
Running Rambles has reached a milestone –– fifty blogs later, we’re still thinking about all things running and celebrating our love of the sport. In honor of this occasion, I decided to tackle the question that runners always seem to come back to: “Why do we run?” Well, like some people’s Facebook relationship statuses, “It’s complicated.” Ironically, this very simple activity –– putting one foot in front of the other at a faster-than-walking pace –– means many things to many people. We often run for deeply personal reasons. Those can vary from the straightforward (wanting that extra slice of guilt-free...
Make Yourself Visible
Here's an important running tip for the upcoming month: Daylight hours are decreasing. Be sure to make yourself visible with a combination of active and passive reflectivity. Active reflectivity includes clip-on lights (The Night Runner 270 allows you to put bright headlights on your running shoes!), wrist-mounted flashlights, and the always-useful headlamp (It’s good to see where you are stepping.). Put lights on your shoes your wrist and your head! This little clip-on strobe light by Nathan is particularly useful. Passive reflectivity usually consists of 3M Scotchlite...
Racing Recovery: The Reverse Taper
It’s fall! All that summer training and those miles that you sweated for during the long hot days of August are coming to fruition. Many people have decided to make the move from their usual diet of 5Ks and 10Ks and are planning to take advantage of the chill in the air by challenging themselves with their first half or full marathon. If that describes you, read on. First, I hope your preparation has been going well. You’ve probably already found a great training group and coach who can share the journey with you. (If not, I suggest that you...
