Did you set some New Year’s resolutions? It’s time to revisit them and check to see if you’re still committed. If not –– assess what went awry, adjust, and get back on track. There’s plenty of year left.
Often, people stumble when they’ve set goals that are –– how shall we put this delicately –– too darn tough. Herculean tasks are hard to accomplish unless you’re Hercules. If you’ve found yourself thinking, “Why does everything have to be so difficult?” it’s time to take a step back and rethink.
Are you this guy? If so, stop reading. Otherwise…
Here’s a helpful hint: resolutions can be fun. In fact, “running treats” can help reinvigorate your running and health and provide additional motivation to stick with those resolutions that require a little more willpower.
Here’s a list (in no particular order) of some resolutions to put fun in your run:
- Doing some racing this year? Try some racing flats. Not only will you be carrying less weight around, but also wearing light-weight, racing-specific shoes can make you feel faster.
Brooks Hyperion Racing Flat
- Having some problems getting outside for a run when winter weather turns cold and nasty? Get some new gear. It might be time for a new jacket or pair of running tights. Light yourself up with reflective materials.
- Pick a new race and a new distance. A brand-new distance guarantees a new PR!
- Having problems setting long-term running goals? Choose a destination race. Now’s the time to start planning for a big-city marathon. Disney’s race series is also very popular. Yes, you can combine a destination race and a vacation and the planning is perfect for the winter rest/recovery time.
- If you run for exercise and stress relief, try signing up for your first race with a running buddy. It can be a fun challenge that will keep your running fresh.
- Need a better way to assess your running? Get a GPS watch to help chart your success while looking cool.
Garmin Forerunner 235
- Download some fun new running apps. I suggest STRAVA! This app (strava.com/) shows you who has been running your favorite routes, lets you see how other people train, and gives you a way to asynchronously compete with friends and strangers. (The Fleet Feet Running Club is a STRAVA Club.)
- Did you decide that you were going to meet some new people this year? We’re lucky to live in an area with such a vibrant, friendly running community and there are plenty of ways to get more social. For example, the Fleet Feet Running Club meets on Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM and Wednesday evenings at 6:00 PM. It’s a great way to get a run in and meet new people. If you are looking for some group coaching that will help you achieve your running goals, join a training program (fleetfeetalbany.com/pages/fleet-feet-distance-project).
- Here’s an easy one: try some new nutrition items. Are you always using the same GUs? Try some different flavors! Have you tried Power Surge Nut Butters? Gourmet nut butters such as white chocolate peanut butter, cookie dough peanut butter, and blueberry almond butter are a great way to get your necessary protein.
Yummy
- Finally, treat yourself by preparing your body for the long run. Look into strength training –– you’re worth it (fleetfeetalbany.com/pages/strength-training).
